Episode 162 – Seeing is Believing

Michael and Michael are excited that it is that special time of year again, the one where you can buy Thin Mints, and Caramel deLites, and all manner of Girl Scout cookies.  And they are even more excited about the kickstarter game being developed by the Girl Scouts where the cookies take center stage, and the scouts learn all about the various development platforms: MIT’s Scratch, iOS & Android to create the game.  Nice touch, by the way, that the Kickstarter video uses virtual audio reality with positional sound.

Turning from the savory to the visual, Michael and Michael discuss the OxSight augmented reality solution to help low vision people see better — determine the foreground from the background, improve the contrast, zoom in and more.  A tremendous use for such promising technology.  Be sure to check out the link below to see the videos for yourself.  See if you believe Michael R, that this is Geordi LaForge’s visor.

While traveling to the University of South Carolina School of Engineering, Michael M saw some of the older computing technology on display (picture above) and remembered well using his Dataman a few years ago.

Episode 79 – Insert Witty Title Here

The Michaels are back this week, even though the day jobs are catching us all and consuming more and more time. We are feeling it in our reduction of gaming that we can do – so we followup on last week’s blog post on games Michael R. is no longer playing. During the course of our discussion, Michael M. decides that he too should post a blog post on the games that he is no longer play too. What is the tipping point that makes a game no longer fun? Should a game for work be fun, or just engaging? Speaking of engagement, we then look at how the NCAA drives more engagement into the game of basketball during March Madness. Including the crazy new contest with Warren Buffet and Quicken Loans “Perfect Bracket” game. Does basketball really need more engagement (Michael R)? Can basketball get more engagement (Michael M)?

Michael R. doesn’t really think that quarter end and tournament brackets don’t align very well, due to the winner take all / win lose situation that tournaments promote verses the quarter end drive to ship products. Michael M. looks at how this is true for traditional periodic events, however, when there is a major event (non-repeating) there are good opportunities to use a tournament push. We also look at the various different motivational / reward systems which make the most sense for the appropriate business event. When do you like to play the Grinding games verses the Big Event games? Which aligns best to your work environment? We would love to hear from you on the games that engage you the most.

Episode 76 – Play Games at IBM

This week we get a little peak behind the current of a very popular Alternate Reality Game experience at IBM that Phaedra led at IBM. It was the very first corporate wide ARG played at IBM. The purpose was to introduce IBMers to the next generation of our Social Business Tools. We discuss the value of understanding the audience for your game, and the expected outcomes. We also learn that the player is not always going to play the game you want them to play, but as long as the lesson is learned it is well worth it.

Michael M describes his Oscar worthy performance to engage his team in Budapest in this alternate reality. While Phaedra describes the trials and tribulations of building the story, and navigating the corporate minefield on what is the right story for a business game.
