Episode 84 – Engagement through Gamification

Sandy, Phaedra and Michael M. find the uncommon ties, to bring together people, planet & profitabiliy through the engagement power of gamification in this episode. The discussion spans Human Resoures, with Phaedra speaking in Paris this week, to Nike’s gamification ideas from the Harvard Business Review Game Jam, to Tesla’s strategy to deliver an electric car for everyone. The ideas spark and arc between the co-hosts around ways for how individuals can participate economically in the new opportunties that are opening up through the intersecting business models from Solar City, Schneider Electric and Tesla. Ideas on SMS-based gaming and local events are also discussed, from Saxapahaw, NC’s Switchpoint conference and a teambuilding exercise on Margitsziget in Budapest where Michael plays the role of the “fehér nyúl”.

A very happy Mother’s Day to Sandy, Phaedra and all the Moms listening in to the podcast!

Episode 76 – Play Games at IBM

This week we get a little peak behind the current of a very popular Alternate Reality Game experience at IBM that Phaedra led at IBM. It was the very first corporate wide ARG played at IBM. The purpose was to introduce IBMers to the next generation of our Social Business Tools. We discuss the value of understanding the audience for your game, and the expected outcomes. We also learn that the player is not always going to play the game you want them to play, but as long as the lesson is learned it is well worth it.

Michael M describes his Oscar worthy performance to engage his team in Budapest in this alternate reality. While Phaedra describes the trials and tribulations of building the story, and navigating the corporate minefield on what is the right story for a business game.

We also that ultimate question – can you make gamify at work with out Badges and Points? List to this week’s episode and find out!!

Episode 75 – Citizen Scientists

SenseFly

SenseFly at CES

On this special winter evening episode of GamesAtWork dot Biz, Sandy and Michael R. get together to talk about how Citizen Scientists are changing how data is collected, processed, and how Gaming technology is being leveraged in these crowdsourced scientific endeavors. We think about how citizen scientists are impacting weather forecasting, thanks to WeatherUnderground, Tsunami tracking with Seismic sensors, Extraterrestrial science with Seti@Home, and protein folding with Fold.It. We then focus on the overlap between games and the real world with the upcoming really cool game – ReRoll Game.

This and a whole lot more on this week’s show! Drop us a comment or please rate us on iTunes and post a review. We value your feedback.

Episode 69 – Award Nominated Podcast

We are at 75% this week, with Sandy, Phaedra, and Michael R. giving a few updates on the C.A.V.E. at Villanova which we have all found out now means Computer Aided Visual and Virtual Environment. When you get your C.A.V.E. at home will you be fully immersive with rubber bullets? If you are near Villanova, stop by and visit Dr. Klassner to the C.A.V.E. being built in the library!

We also dig a bit deeper on Alternate Reality Games talking about Cisco’s global sales meeting games. Phaedra also tells us about the three letter acronym’s spy conference game, that was discussed at the serious games summit. This gets Michael thinking about the game Assassin from his days in high school. As we think thru this we start comparing story driven ARG’s and very open world games. How they differ in the amount of engagement each has? What is the difference between alternate reality games, and an alternate reality in a game? How do games like Ingress compare with augmented reality games? Do you need a good storyline to make your ARG valid? Or can the story unfold on it’s own, if your ARG’s world is engaging enough? Do you need competitive play or collaborative play?

Episode 68 – Hipster CEO

This week’s show include two Michaels and one Phaedra, we miss you Sandy! We also will be taking a week off to spend time with our friends and families, playing games of course! Oh yeah, and it’s Thanksgiving in the United States, so we will also be thankful that we can spend time playing games at work!

Thank you to listener Kirk for providing a great link to follow up from last week’s show about bitcoin mining within games. We also thank Apple’s App Store for providing us with another story on apps being pulled from the app store related to bitcoins. We then do a quick left turn to talk about Candy Crush, luckily your co-hosts will NOT be spamming you with Candy Crush invites.

level-up
We then follow a rabbit hole on a website and find a new game to play – Hipster CEO! What fun lies in store for us all as we try our hands at a virtual startup. Let us know if you pick it up, who can go public first! And to our U.S. listeners, Happy Thanksgiving!

Well the app pulled was a bitcoin exchange app, not a bit coin mining app. Oh well… Sometimes you just have to admit your mistake.

Episode 28 – Dating Flashmob

Michael and Phaedra express their love of martial arts, and how they don’t mind deceiving themselves in the least, by gaining cardio exercise benefits while doing something inherently fun.  “Dirt runs faster than I do” says Phaedra, thinking that zombies chasing her would be a great motivator to run even faster!  Talk about living in the undead moment!

Phaedra and Michael talk about a wide variety of alternate reality games (ARGs), from the recently started Google Niantic Project, to the stolen Audi (from 2006 if you can believe that!) to the MIT Game Lab’s Smithsonian game.

Then, the concept of applying games to dating is raised, and while you may think that Phaedra and Michael would start thinking about The Dating Game — no, they take it fully in the more modern way, with phones acting as agents and helping to arrange Dating Flashmobs!

Concluding this show with saving throws featuring videos from Rhett & Link, Michael and Phaedra agree that if you have a tough problem, call the bacon bot ARG and have a good laugh.  And a hot tip…  if you watch the video in full screen view, there are some hidden videos interviews to find.
