Episode 192 – PVP-Y


On a Games at Work busy day — the co-hosts start with follow up to the last two episodes dealing with smart speakers about the new HomePod being released.  While not said on the show, Michael M is looking forward to experiencing the dulcet tones of the Games At Work podcast on his HomePod in just a short few days!

Robotics & automation loom large for this episode with many stories converging on the concept of whether automation will be a net job destroyer or creator.  The MIT Technology Review article gives a comprehensive snapshot of a variety of sources estimating the net jobs created and lost due to advances in AI — and the need for advanced education as the technology behind smart speakers and virtual assistants begins to take hold in the knowledge economy in the same way that physical robots have in warehouses and assembly lines.  Education is key to the new roles being created and in preparing people for the next set of opportunities: how Artificial Intelligence bots are trained to do their jobs, the human-computer interface design, the maintenance of these systems as well as the integration to other systems.

Moving from virtual robotics, to physical robotics, Michael and Michael talk about the new Cyberdyne Medical Exoskeleton HAL.

Continuing the trend of finding examples of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, the Games At Work team found two compelling stories published in the MIT Technology Review:

Joining AI and AR, the article on a lidar-enabled augmented reality experience to help construction workers know when something is not correctly installed can easily save time and money by making improvements when it is the easiest to do so.

The US Ski Team is taking advantage of virtual reality for practice on slope visualization to prepare for the Olympic events.  Michael and Michael talk about the idea of using an augmented reality version of this to show the optimal apex & route, taking advantage of snow conditions to guide the skier, in a rich HUD fashion in the ski goggles.

Finishing up the episode, Michael and Michael conclude with a couple of intruding games, including TrapAdventure 2, a Mario Brothers-esque side scroller that had us in stitches, and the South Park game which requires player vs player gameplay in order to advance the storyline and upgrade (hence the tile of this episode!).

Episode 187 – Bionic Eye

On an unseasonably warm Friday, Michael & Michael get together to discuss a sports to business application of virtual reality, that of training retail store employees to prepare for the oncoming rush of bargain hunters on Black Friday instead of the rush of oncoming defensive backs.

A favorite topic of ours — augmented reality use methods — resurfaces in this episode, this time prompted by the recent Apple acquisition of a Canadian AR company called VRVANA, which leads to a conversation about miniaturization of this technology, ultimately embedding into bionic contact lenses, or even a potential direct optic nerve connection.  At the very least, we don’t bring up spiders in this episode.  Whew.

The team talks about home robotics, and Rosie from the Jetsons seems to be cropping up in many articles.  The concept of a friendly companion robot is one that many companies are chasing after, and the article for this show comes from an experience with a robot called Jibo.

Closing out the show with a discussion on wearables, Michael and Michael are amazed at the new capabilities enabled by the Kardiaband, and what this implies for future medical devices to improve and save lives.

Episode 137 – Augmented Reality in the Boardroom & Beyond

Episode 137 – Augmented Reality in the Boardroom & Beyond was recorded on Friday, the 20th of May 2016.

Microsoft’s Hololens NFL of the future —

Phaedra and Michael M take time out to talk about mental wellness gaming applications, a “first person shooter” from the perspective of a civillian struggling to survive, and corporate collaboration applications making great use of data visualizations for problem solving now, and for the opportunities for machine learning and augmented reality for the future.

Michael was very impressed with the Microsoft Surface he saw at the SAP SapphireNow coference in Orlando last week, and made the connection for how the Microsoft Hololens product could make the collaboration even greater with augmented reality — not just for business applications, but also for medical scenaros, where a specialist could ‘beam into’ the operating theater, and highlight what needed to be done for the surgeons in the room.

Episode 122 – Motivational Design


Phaedra and Michael M start off the show with a discussion about Phaedra’s experience at the SimTecT conference in Adelaide, Australia.  Phaedra reflected on an interesting question posed to her while at the conference — how motivational design could be used to extract someone from an indoctrinated, calcified way of thinking.  Motivational design leads to humanitarian design and then on to persuasive design, not just for simulation content, but also for how the experience is created and tailored for the user to know when and how to interrupt their flow for maximum benefit and impact.

As you pass through the rabbit hole, and into the game, you learn something new.
