Episode 122 – Motivational Design

Phaedra and Michael M start off the show with a discussion about Phaedra’s experience at the SimTecT conference in Adelaide, Australia.  Phaedra reflected on an interesting question posed to her while at the conference — how motivational design could be used to extract someone from an indoctrinated, calcified way of thinking.  Motivational design leads to humanitarian design and then on to persuasive design, not just for simulation content, but also for how the experience is created and tailored for the user to know when and how to interrupt their flow for maximum benefit and impact.

As you pass through the rabbit hole, and into the game, you learn something new.

Sandy, Phaedra and Michael R. are traveling, on vacation or otherwise engaged in important work, so Michael M. takes a shot at a solo show to explore some thinking on how a number of major apps are breaking down their function into smaller bite sized bits and deploying them as individual apps.

Examples of this are FourSquare, with its Swarm app, Facebook, with the Messenger app, alongside some of the recent acquisitions like Instragam and WhatsApp.

Linking to the Gamification theme of this podcast, Michael muses on how this application functionality breakdown allows for smaller component pieces of functionality can be recombined in a way to allow for games and play — how quickly the same exact functions can be reorderd and recombined to create innovative ways to deliver new sets of function from the same component parts.

Episode 84 – Engagement through Gamification

Sandy, Phaedra and Michael M. find the uncommon ties, to bring together people, planet & profitabiliy through the engagement power of gamification in this episode. The discussion spans Human Resoures, with Phaedra speaking in Paris this week, to Nike’s gamification ideas from the Harvard Business Review Game Jam, to Tesla’s strategy to deliver an electric car for everyone. The ideas spark and arc between the co-hosts around ways for how individuals can participate economically in the new opportunties that are opening up through the intersecting business models from Solar City, Schneider Electric and Tesla. Ideas on SMS-based gaming and local events are also discussed, from Saxapahaw, NC’s Switchpoint conference and a teambuilding exercise on Margitsziget in Budapest where Michael plays the role of the “fehér nyúl”.

Dan Brown’s Inferno

Phaedra and Michael M riff on a number of topics, ranging from Dan Brown’s most recent book to embeddable computing games.  The premise of Dan Brown’s Inferno, which focuses on the rapidly expanding human population on Earth provides a launchpad for thinking about how games have helped people work through very difficult situations.  Phaedra mentions that the recently discovered 3 super earths could be a solution.

Mobile isn’t just something you can do with your thumb.  While today’s mobile devices are ones that you hold in your hand, as in a smartphone or tablet, it is easy to imagine that the interface and interaction will be via voice, gesture or thought in the near future.  With this in mind, Michael and Phaedra imagine what games might be like in 5 years, when games may take advantage of embeddable and wearable computing.  Phaedra postulates that MMO-style mobile games will be the rage, with people within a certain radius will be flagged as a “level 25 mage” coming up the escalator next to you.  Michael adds that a subdermal computing device may vibrate to alert you to the presence of that character in the game, and Phaedra adds that Google Glass may show that person as the character.  Gazoom!  Laser tag where you use your body to shoot, and you would feel it based on the devices that you are wearing.  Holographic gameboards to play chess in thin air.  People acting out stories, movies, books together in the same space, or in specially designed rooms hundreds of miles away from one another.  The future’s so bright, we gotta wear shades!
