Episode 176 – I Got Slimed!

Who you gonna call?  Three friends, we hope, to rush over to Madam Tussaud’s Ghostbusters Experience to check out the Void’s “Hyper-Reality” take on your becoming a Ghostbuster, and immersing yourselves in a full body simulation, where you can walk around wherever you wish within the bounds of the simulation.  This is different from the classic VR experiences where you are tethered to a small location by the wire on your Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.  From the YouTube video, this mixed reality experience overlays the special effects of the Ghostbusters world over real world objects, wearing a proton accelerator and headset while interacting on a stage specially built for this experience.  Michael and Michael discovered this while reading up on the new virtual reality Star Wars experience that The Void is working on with Disney.  If the Star Wars version is as good as the Ghostbusters experience, Star Wars fans are going to be in for a treat!  Michael R shared some links related to the Avatar movie, and Disney’s other immersive experience/rides for people to enjoy the Na’vi world.

Episode 160 – 3D OBD

src = obdii.com

Car? Whar? Over thar!

Michael & Michael get together to talk about one of the original examples of augmented reality, the Head Up Display (HUD) for cars, and explore the example of the Hudway Glass, an ingeniously simple Kickstarter product that allows a user to place their phone on the dash and have the phone’s display reflected back to the driver. Michael R remembers an app with this kind of capability from way back when called V-Cockpit.

Keeping with the pretty clever car theme, the pair then move to the innovation that Ford is bringing to the market for Ford and Lincoln cars: an OBD II module that plugs into your Ford car, and because of the software in your car and this additional module, you can remote start your car, download your car’s performance data, even use the 4G LTE modem as a wireless hotspot to connect your WiFi devices in the car. Michael R noted that while the OBD II port has been a standard part of every car since 1996, each manufacturer has their own proprietary software so a universal version to provide all the connected car capabilities is not highly likely. Even so, Michael R has the OBDLink MX tool for translating error codes and warning lights, along with engine diagnostics. Enabling connected car data sharing opens up more possibilities, and the insurance marketplace is one of them, as evidenced by Progressive Insurance’s Snapshot offering.

Wrapping up this short show, Michael and Michael agree that 3D TV is not the wave of the future anymore, and the article points toward the idea of VR and TV merging at some time. While certainly possible, we’ve seen other examples of holographic TV, and from Neal Stephenson’s novels, concepts of immersive storytelling where people become the actors themselves.

Episode 38 – Dragon Box

The Michael’s are on together, unfortunately Phaedra could not make it this week due to unforeseen events. We talk about the game Dragon Box, which helps little kids learn the concepts of Algebra. The game so interested Michael M. that he actually shelled out money for the game and is testing it out on his own kids.

We then go down on a bit of a rathole on can you truly use your tablet for content creation, or is it just a consumption device. Is MyScript Calculator content creation?

We also theorize about the new Facebook game – “Bang with Friends” and how you can use it at your work place. Talk about an exciting show! Could this be a great parallel to security testing? Will this game break your heart – just like the Simpson’s Tapped Out? Do you have your golden ticket?
