Episode 101 – Oh Canada, Doh!

We begin this post with a little levity based on the South Park idea that Freemium games were created by the Canadian devil (apologies to our neighbors to the north).

The Michaels go deep on last week’s episode about Freemium games. We also begin an experiment to remove all freemium games from our lives. Are we addicted to these games? Can they be used for good? We look at how to potentially leverage this approach of Freemium games to improving work processes. Tell us what you think. What would you use “premium’ currency for to not have to deal with at work?

Episode 78 – The Show is Already in Progress

We join the show already in progress as Michael M has finally read Kill Decision and convinces Sandy that she should go read it immediately! This week’s show becomes a bit of a review show including books, movies and games. What is your favorite? What do you think gaming will be called in 10-15 years? Will it still be gaming, will it be work, will it be something else? In the age of free culture, open source, and makers, how do we ensure that we continue to meet the basic needs of the individual to allow for the value creation of open culture?

We then flip over to a discussion of Flappy Bird and how it is the ultimate realization of the one more move game. We also discuss what games are we playing now. Threes, Disco Zoo (continues to feed Michael M’s 8-bit addiction), Real Racing 3, Tiny Tycoons, PvZ, PvZ2, etc. At what point do the games no longer give you enough dopamine to keep playing? We look back fondly at a few games that have slowly fallen off our rotation. We decide to do a bit of a game walk thru of Tiny Tycoon so you all can decide how much fun it is – NOT!!

Episode 52 – Swapping your Battery in 90 Seconds

While many people are taking the day off in the U.S. to recover from all the sounds of the fireworks, the Michael’s take the time to check out some new glasses which you can wear via your iPad.

We then look at how a blog post by Ramin Shokrizade over at Gamasutra, where he discusses the tips and tricks that Free to Play game designers use to get money from players. We decide it would be put to much better use if we can take these techniques and use them to help business and employees improve their skills and efficiencies. Can you identify who will use a game for the best outcome verses those who may just be using it to pass time? What about how some games or businesses use progress gates to help self select players. When do you decide not to play any more? We answer all of these questions.

We then look at how Tesla is changing the rules in how long it takes to tank up your electric car! Will this help change the buying behaviors of car shoppers?

Finally, we want to hear about how you think gaming can be used to help more young women and girls become engaged in Engineering and Science. We’ll be talking about it next week on Games At Work dot Biz!
