Episode 175 – Killing the iPhone

Augmented reality and self-driving automobiles.  Two great topics that really get Michael and Michael’s engines revving!  Staring off with the Mashable articles, one of which inspired the episode name with it’s similar name, the pair talk about ways for holographic projection can be used for augmented reality without glasses.  The first example is the Hydrogen phone by the high end video camera manufacturer Red, which projects the holographic image up from the phone.  A second example from the Future Interfaces Group at Carnegie Mellon University is an augmented reality projector that fits into a lightbulb socket and projects down from the ceiling onto a desktop, and sensors connected to the projector allow the user to manipulate the user interface, dock user interfaces onto real objects like computers and books, resize them and much more.  The video above shows what they have accomplished — pretty amazing.  The namesake for this episode deals with more of the glasses-driven approach for how the next generation of augmented reality could replace the iPhone, and while this is plausible, the article does point out that the referenced patent indicates a reliance on a computer (read as a phone) that the glasses connect to.

The automotive section of this episode deals with self driving vehicles, such a the Dutch startup Amber — whose business model focuses on mobility as a service, where transportation is ready for you when you need it to be because of the predictive analytic models and the self driving vehicles optimizing traffic patterns to have a vehicle near you when you need it.  Continuing on the machine learning of fleets of self driving vehicles, the pair discuss an NPR article that focuses Alphabet’s Waymo used a fleet of Googlers driving around on their bicycles to create a model to predict how unpredictable bicyclists behave and better avoid accidents.

Things are about to get amazing.

Episode 116 – Monster Bash

This week we are especially delighted to have two special guests on the show, Eric Mertens from Galois, Inc.  and Aaron Camerata from voidALPHA to share their insight and experience on the Verigames project with DARPA over that past couple of years.

The concept here is pretty simple — can crowdsourced players playing a game perform formal verification / code testing faster and more cost-effectively than testers following the traditional development testing methodologies?  And if so, can these same kind of constructs and methods allow for code creation to write new code to solve new problems?

Episode 96 – The Professional Line Sitter

The Michael’s are back with a bit gamification for travel, we try and take a different approach then our prior episodes were we talked about how the Airline Industry was gaming boarding, and see if we can setup an on-line auction for improving your seating on the plane. Perhaps we can get a bit of advice from Zaboo and his seat saving network idea (see “The Guild” season 5). How can you make this game work for both the passenger and the airlines? When at restaurants can we figure out a way to swap locations in line? Can the Restaurant get in on the action? We have a few ideas!

We then look at geolocation data, and it may allow a group of travelers, can find new and exciting things to do when in a new location. There are a few new apps in this space to mention on the show.

We then take a deeper look at Kano – A kickstarter project that is now available for regular purchase. It helps gets get started with programming by teaching them python game programming using a very cool Raspberry PI setup. Thank you @epredator for the great blog post.

Episode 89 – Augmented Driving

This week, the Michaels focus on how Google’s various properties could all come together for some really cool game play. We also have a surprise at the end of the show! Listen all the way to the end for a surprise.

We discuss the possibilities of what Ingress is really doing as you play. Does the collection of XM change the world? Is there an upcoming cool update to have Ingress and Waze come together? Did you see some cool road-muching during the World Cup? Michael M. tells about the game that was happening in Hungary, while Michael R. did not see any soccer balls to much during the world cup in North Carolina. What is Ingress doing as you play? Michael M. gives a clue based on the amount of battery drainage he is seeing while on a Budapest tram and the amount of data being used. This takes us on a bit of a rant/diversion on data plans.

Jaguar posted a video this week on the Augmented reality, which brings us back to games at work thinking about the overlap between this technology and the cool racing game – Real Racing 3. Is this all bringing us closer to the fully automated driving future? If we get this far, how will security hold up – perhaps the team at the HOPE conference will let us know?

We will have a bit of a break for the next few weeks due to work schedules and travels… However Michael M. commits to providing a show based on interviews with a group of local (Hungary) based game developers.

Episode 72 – Crowd vs Crowd

Phaedra, Sandy, Michael and Michael are all on deck for this podcast to discuss location based games, review Michael R’s experiences from CES, brainstorm gamifying sports, and much much more. Tune in for some serious discussion on serious games.

Location, Location, Location
Michael M kicks things off to follow on from last week’s blog post on The Tap Labs’ game Tiny Tycoons. Things get really location specific as Sandy suggests that there should be an emerging new game along the lines of SnapChat called SnapTrack, where location information is shared with friends, but only for a limited time. Given that the last entity to have that name was sold for (wait for it) one billion dollars, there could quite well be something to it!

CES
Michael R gives a terrific flyover from his experience at the Consumer Electronics Show, summing things up by saying “the Internet of Things is real. Software and integration is real, and 3D printing is now entering mainstream.” A shoutout to Ian “epredator” Hughes for his early thinking in this area. Exciting developments in robotics, contact lenses (spiders are next, I’m sure) and augmented/interactive television give the team plenty to explore. Michael R had a chance to meet with the SeeSpace team to discuss the InAiR innovation while he was in Las Vegas, and that interview is here:

Gamifying Sports
Phaedra was eager to think about the gamification of sports during this championship season and to kick around other ways of engaging sports fans beyond Fantasy Football. The team discusses players predicting plays (and during the show editing, came across an NFL game exactly in this vein), sports trivia and user interface means of overlaying information on top of the existing game in action via the InAir concept discussed in the CES section. An idea about engaging individuals to play the sport while the sport is played live, using the same players, the same data and analytics is kicked around, and the comparison of player vs player, team vs team and crowd vs crowd is served up.

Episode 65 – Planes, Games, and Automobiles

We welcome our forth co-host – Sandy Kearney to the show. Sandy comes to use with a background in alternative futures analysis and gaming business, processes, and conferences! Please reach out and welcome Sandy to the show!

While Google purchased Waze earlier this year, it seems that the monetization of Waze is starting to be obvious, as Michael R. observes ads popping up at stop signs and red lights. We all think back to the fun we’ve had on Waze early on where we munched up roads and worked on leaderboards. We also miss the holiday special items to run over while playing Waze. We think that critical mass of Waze usage must have occurred and that most of the roads have been munched. We then riff on the driving experience for a bit, with lots of ideas on how driving habits are changing and what it means for today’s drivers.

As we move up thru the troposphere we jump on planes and enjoy the fact that we can start playing games during takeoff and landing. What games are you going to play or are you just gonna use this time to read your e-books and listen to music? We also try and figure out what kind of games you could make on your mobile device that could leverage this narrow window of take off and landing. Can we start improving the gaming experience by playing against each other while on board? We also figure that gaming the Safety briefing could be gamified for some really cool effects. Which airline will be first to offer a bonus for you if you run their app during take off and landing? What about the luggage game? What about free wifi if you download their app? Come on airlines let’s game this opportunity.

We then go to Infinity and Beyond, as Sandy talks about the movie “Gravity” and how they simulate space walks. Real games at work can help NASA and others learn much quickly – and with tools like the Oculus Rift we can start experiencing much of this at home ourselves. Michael R. get’s his Launch invite. Episode 62 – Gamification Carrots & Sticks

Phaedra and Michael M hold down the fort for the podcast, discussing the treatment of video games in the media in the wake of the tragic Navy Yard shootings and drawing some interesting thoughts on the nature of serious games to assist with mental health.

Gamifying Travel
They continue with a discussion on gamifying travel, and explore an idea where the game is to crowdsource the best travel options & prices between city pairs, setting up a competition to find the best solution using humans instead of algorithms.  The suggestion for how to monetize this game brings up the experiment in Sweden with the speed camera lottery, where abiders (those who observe the posted speed limit) are entered into a lottery to win the fines of those that speed.  As is their nature, Phaedra and Michael explore ways to game the game, and come up with some interesting solutions, including having an option in Waze to optimize travel routing to maximize entry into such contests and methods to avoid creating situations such as in Benson NC where people might cruise up and down the road in hopes of getting more entries in the lottery.

Gamifying work processes
Strava is a geolocation-based exercise game for runners and bikers that reward the fastest times on a stretch of road with a crown to be defended and won back, should someone best your time.  Strava is used as a base to consider whether there’s a way to find a process that we want people to comply with, want them to execute as quickly as possible, minimize escapes by reinforcing abiders are put into a lottery to win something of value to them.  The additional randomness of the reward – the carrot – may get more people to opt in and play.  Figuring out what is meaningful to the player is key.  How can gamification and serious games help people to adopt a new process with carrots and sticks?   There is a game in there, we just need to tease it out.  We would love to hear your ideas!

Episode 44 – Machine Games

Michael R talks about listening to last week’s show while on a plane, and he liked the “Mother fudging snakes, on the Mother fudging plane.” And all the cool things he’s been up to lately, including how machines can be social when they all start talking to each other. While you may have had M2M communications for 40 years now, we are living in interesting times as all the machines are starting to get more social and integrations are driving cool new solutions which will start changing human behavior. Imagine the game that many people play with Usage Based Insurance and trying to drive down their car insurance rates. Michael M, however will only entertain the idea of the social machines but is it really here?

We then look at Mind Meld, a cool new social way of pulling things together by listening to your chat and conversations to pull together a mind barf of all the related thoughts. Episode 20 – Social Live Improv

The Michaels are without Phaedra this week, and talk about improv, monkeys, and the intersection between gaming technology and social technologies. FedEx launching new Social Collaboration. Michael M doesn’t realize that Ping is dead! But They Might Be Giants lives on with custom ring tones, just like Carl Kassell on Wait, Wait, Don’t tell Me.
